MSE WALL CONSTRUCTION

What is an MSE Wall?

Construction companies often face the challenge of preventing the erosion and sliding of earth during the process of building and expanding important structures. The original design for the MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls we use today was created in the 1960s. Although modern fabrication techniques and technology have made significant changes to MSE walls, the basic concept remains the same. You can now find MSE walls functioning as retaining walls, bridge abutments, damns, sea walls, and dikes.

MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls are used to stabilize slopes and retain soil. They’re generally made from precast segmental blocks, panels, or geocells that are designed to tolerate movement. The precast forms are filled with soil to create a strong structure that is able to retain the soil backfill. Many MSE walls use inset fascia rows to create individual cells that can be filled with top soil for planting to create green walls.

MSE Wall Benefits

MSE walls provide a number of unique benefits that standard retaining walls can’t. One of the important attributes of an MSE wall is its flexibility. Because MSE walls are more flexible than retaining walls, they’re able to withstand higher seismic stress without sustaining major damage. They are also more easily installed, and they allow for a quicker construction process.
