In 1967 Rulon Harper quit his job and started Harper Excavating — headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. As the company grew, Rulon decided that he would be more effective if he developed other divisions. Over the course of the following years, he started a sand and gravel division, a ready-mix division, an environmental division, a general contracting division, and a precast division.
Rulon was buying so many precast boxes from other manufacturers for use on his projects that it made sense to start Harper Precast. In the beginning, all of the products made were used exclusively on Rulon’s projects. However, it didn’t take long to see that there was a lucrative precast market in the Intermountain West. A sales and growth campaign was started to supply precast products to other companies. Harper Precast immediately expanded into one of the largest full service precast concrete suppliers in the area.
